John and I are riding 180km to Northam, Western Australia and back in a day, for the Centre of Asylum Seekers, Refugees & Detainees (CARAD). Why Northam? That's where Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre is. Our sore legs are nothing compared to the journeys CARAD clients have already made fleeing persecution and violence to try and rebuild a life here in WA where they are faced with new challenges just trying to survive in Australia.
We're not the only ones saying Australia's immigration detention conditions and the system overall deserve a hard, compassionate look — the Australian Human Rights Commission and the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention have both raised serious concerns too.
Two MAMILs can't fix that by pedalling but we can help CARAD do the work that does: providing food, healthcare, housing and advocacy for people seeking humanitarian protection who have nowhere else to turn. So dig deep, chuck us a few dollars, share our campaign and help us make it worth the chafing.
Thank you!
