The Daylesford Dharma School is the first primary school in Australia to offer an education based on Buddhist principles. Since our humble beginnings in 2009 we have grown considerably from 15 students to 60 enrolled for 2016.
Our school founder Geshe Konchok Tsering states "The emphasis of this school is to teach the noble qualities of loving kindness and universal responsibility. We are not trying to change these children but to awaken and nurture their own deepest qualities - their innate sense of loving kindness and compassion and their natural tendency towards positive behaviour". We believe that these children are our future loving parents, compassionate leaders, benevolent business operators, peace makers, wise teachers, caring carpenters, truthful politicians…
They are the future who will lead with wisdom and compassion.
Our students are encouraged to explore and develop self-awareness and an awareness of others. Finding their place in this world and where they fit in relation to others.
Through daily meditation, discussion and reflection we are able to provide an opportunity to further enhance social, cultural and environmental awareness. We encourage creative, critical thinking and debate to further nourish valid reasoning skills.
With a deep focus on the environment and ecology our curriculum fosters a sense of exploration and connection with the world around us. The students investigate the different aspects of the local environment and what impacts them socially, ecologically and environmentally.
Our school is at an exciting juncture in its journey as we have outgrown our current premises. We will need to relocate by the end of 2016 to a purpose built property that will enable us to expand and grow into the future. Part of the school's strategic plan is to offer a secondary education some time in to the future and our future property will need to cater for this.
