Three thousand donkeys work in this district and the cruelty inflicted on them is beyond belief. Owners beat the donkeys with spades, steel rods and sticks, make them pull extremely heavy loads and on top of their necks they carry a heavy log yolk system. The carts are very difficult to manoeuvre and the donkeys are continually beaten to run or gallop to pull these horrendous loads, while the inhumane yolk system causes injury to their necks and backs.
Added to this, they work the donkeys at night to gather big, heavy logs from the forest to fuel the kilns and then during the day they haul bricks. These donkeys get no rest from the heavy loads and with every driver beating their exhausted and injured donkeys... it’s beyond words.
Animal Aid Abroad has an action plan to turn this around, but we need your help to achieve it.
To run this program for the first 12 months we need the following:
1. Vet Salary @ $680 per month x 12= $8160
2. A motorbike = $2500
3. Laptop and projector = $650
4. Medicines @ $200 per month x 12 = $2400
5. Carts (set up so the donkeys pull the cart from the chest and lighter design) @ $200 each x 30 = $6000
6. Education equipment and uniforms for village children to attend school if they give up the yolk cart and look after their donkey/s @ $28 per child per year x 30 = $840
Total for first stage of program [12 months] = $ 20,550
Every dollar you can contribute will help us treat the donkeys, educate their owners and provide safe and humane harnesses and carts.
