EDO SA - Protecting the environment through Law

The Environmental Defenders Office SA - protecting the environment through law

Who is the EDO?

We are a not-for-profit community legal centre specialising in public interest environmental law.

The EDO defends the environment in a way that no other organisation can - as the environment's legal team. No longer funded by the Federal Government, we are now looking to the community for support.

Help us maintain our vital services and invest in the EDO by making a one-off donation or a regular monthly donation.

Regular donations from supporters like you enable us to build a secure and sustainable income on which to plan for the future - and allow our legal team to tackle the threats to our environment that might otherwise go unchallenged.

What exactly will my donation be spent on?

Standing up in court to protect our environment is just part of what we do. We also work towards reforming the law to give greater protection to our natural environment (eg Marine Parks), we give free legal advice to individuals and community groups as well as running seminars and school visits as part of community education program.

Information and advice

Empowering people with the knowledge to protect the places they love is central to what we do. On a one-to-one basis, our lawyers advise individuals and community groups on their specific situation, helping them to understand the laws and the processes involved in using the law to defend their environment.

Legal representation

We represent a diverse range of clients, from individuals and grassroots community groups to conservation organisations. There is no other organisation with the capacity and expertise to act for these groups across such a wide range of issues including mining, land use planning, water and biodiversity conservation.

Publications

Our website has the resources help to guide individuals through the legal complexities of the planning system. We have fact sheets on issues such as noise pollution, Freedom of Information, contaminated land, mobile phone towers and court procedures. We also produce a free fortnightly e-bulletin updating over 1,300 subscribers on environmental legal news.
