Engawala is a small (pop 150), remote Aboriginal community in Central Australia where there is a long tradition of painting and creating other artworks.
Engawala Art Centre has been established to support local artists in their creative work and to provide a way for them to sell their art to visitors and online.
Much of the artwork reflects local bush tucker and the fossils that are to be found nearby at Alcoota.
The Centre creates employment in a community where only 10 people have full-time jobs and allows artists to gain an income from their work. This is important in one of the most disadvantaged regions in Australia.
We are about to move the artists into a new Centre created from the shell of an old shop and we have many unfunded or unexpected expenses. These include track lighting for our gallery, water tanks (being in a remote water stressed community we cannot have mains water) and furniture and equipment for a yarn-up area for artists and community Elders.
Selling art is one way of raising funds but all contributions will assist in getting the Centre on a viable financial footing.
