About this cause

The State owes a great deal to Dr. Ferdinando Gagliardi - though he has largely been forgotten.
Dr. Gagliardi and his two daughters, Chinzica Marie and Elettra Clorinda lie in a dirt grave in Brighton General Cemetery, devoid of any markers or headstone.
Dr. Gagliardi was initially engaged as a foreign correspondent, joining the staff of the Melbourne Public Library as early as 1881, being promoted to the position of  Assistant Principal Librarian in 1888, which he held up to the year of his death in 1898. Though occupying the senior position for a period in 1890, and having been offered the position on a permanent basis on a number of occasions, Gagliardi modestly declined. Dr. Gagliardi was dedicated to the creation of a subject based catalogue, where previously the entire collection rested solely upon author listings. Dr. Gagliardi's other main interest lay in the establishment of a silk industry here in Victoria - to which goal he had planted a mulberry orchard at his Hampton residence. The Brighton Cemetorians community group, with family and generous public contributions hope to have a dignified family headstone and monumental surrounds established.
