The existing 140 year old retaining wall (which varies from 1.6m-1m high and bookends the south side of a small bluestone staircase which connects the lower Eastern Courtyard to the upper shared lawn area) has been pushed over and made unstable by an adjoining tree and its substantial roots. The objective of the project is to make the steps and garden area safe and pleasant again for access and use during functions and events. The wall currently has temporary propping for safety and the stairs are not in use. By removing the Jacaranda tree and rebuilding the wall (like for like) the stairs and Eastern Courtyard area will be able to be used safely again.
Boroondara Council has given a permit for the removal of the large Jacaranda Tree (approx. 65--70 years old). The next step is to get formal Heritage Victoria approval to rebuild the wall reusing the existing bricks where feasible and rendering to match the existing wall. We will then apply for a Building Permit which is required due to the height of the wall. The existing Bluestone steps will be retained and relevelled as they have also been pushed out of alignment by the tree roots. It is planned to plant a new mature Jacaranda Tree (approx. 100L pot size = 3-4m high) at a safe distance from the rebuilt wall. Two garden urns are missing from the top of the walls, one of which is missing and one in storage. The one in storage will be reattached and made good.
