Disabled Surfers Association of Australia Far North Coast

Gathering running costs & equipment

Between October and March annually the Far North Coast NSW Branch hold 6 gatherings at Kingscliff, Byron Bay x 2, Evans Head, Yamba and Minnie Water.  At these gatherings we create opportunities for everyone including our disabled participants and able bodied volunteers, to experience unique, safe and happy surfing events, whilst under comeplete supervision from trained Volunteer Team Leaders and Beach Marshalls.

A large portion of our running costs involve feeding and watering 100 plus participants, their carer's, our volunteers and anyone else who turns up on the day at each gathering,  There is also maintenance and replacement of equiment, including the upkeep of two trailers and the cost of towing these trailers up and down the coast with volunteer's private vehicles.

By way of some background the Disabled Surfers Association of Australia Inc. (DSSA) is a uniquely Australian Association initially set up in 1986 for injured surfers, within a short time the DSAA dramatically widened its target group to cater for all disabilities that is anyone willing to have a go.

The DSAA is a total voluntary registered Public Benevolent Institution with eighteen branches across Australia and New Zealand and is Surfing’s only Registered Charity dedicated to the Disabled. Our group of volunteers exist purely on the love of what they do with the support of our members and our local communities, together with the odd small government grant.
