What Is Glebe Youth Service (GYS)
Glebe Youth Service provides services to 12-24 year olds from an old building in the heart of Glebe in the inner suburbs of Sydney. Most of the young people who come to Glebe Youth Service are from the nearby public housing estates, and around 85% are Aboriginal.
What does GYS Do?
We run after school and holiday activities; the After Dark program on Friday and Saturday nights that provides a safe, alcohol-free space for young people; we run skills and health programs; and we house a school program for teenagers at risk of falling through the education cracks. But we do much more than providing a safe, enjoyable environment for our young people.
Many of those who come to GYS have experienced more than their share of life's problems. They find friends in the experienced youth workers that we employ - friends who will help them work through family problems, or resolve difficulties at school, or get a job, or find a place to live, even go with them to court if they have to.
Does GYS make a difference?
Yes! We rejoice in our success stories - like the story of Mark (not his real name). Mark is Aboriginal and comes from a large family. In his early years he was exposed to domestic violence and drug use. As a teenager Mark experienced mental health issues and he started to misuse drugs and alcohol. He also regularly found himself in trouble with the law. By accessing GYS programs and services such as; structured skills groups, counseling, case management and crisis intervention Mark has managed to stabilize his life and develop positive aspirational goals. Through our partnership with employers and training institutions we were able to get Mark into a construction apprenticeship. He is now one year though his apprenticeship and he hopes one day to buy his own home.
Why does GYS need your donation?
In the turbulent teenage years, young people often need very intensive support, if only to get through a short crisis period. With only two youth workers, we can't always spare enough time to give them the help they need, as well as run all our regular programs.
What will GYS do with your donation?
Your donation will go to employing a qualified youth worker whose role will focus on education and employment. This person will help young people through the problems that threaten to derail their education; and will help them to find meaningful work to keep them out of the poverty cycle for ever.
Are donations tax deductible?
Will I receive a receipt for my donation?
Yes, immediately sent to you by email when approved.
