Graeme Turner AO FAHA (1947–2025) was one of Australia's most distinguished humanities scholars, a pioneering figure in cultural and media studies, and a passionate advocate for the contribution of humanities knowledge to public life.
To honour Graeme's extraordinary legacy, the Australian Academy of the Humanities is establishing the Graeme Turner AO FAHA Policy Internship Program.
The program will create opportunities for humanities and creative arts PhD candidates and recent graduates with the potential to make significant contributions to Australia's cultural, civic and policy landscape. Through placements with public policy, cultural and civic organisations, participants will gain practical experience, professional networks and pathways to apply their expertise to issues of public importance.
In doing so, the program will help ensure that Graeme's lifelong commitment to scholarship, public engagement and the public good continues to inspire future generations.
With $50,000 in seed funding already committed through the Academy's Circle of Champions initiative, the program will commence in 2027. Our goal is to raise a further $150,000 to place the program on a stable footing and support its growth over time. With the support of Fellows, friends and supporters of the Academy, we aim to create a lasting national initiative that equips emerging humanities scholars with the skills, networks and practical experience needed to contribute to public policy, national debate and decision-making.
In doing so, we will help ensure that Graeme's commitment to intellectual leadership, public engagement and the public value of the humanities continues to shape future generations.

The Graeme Turner AO FAHA Policy Internship Program seeks to bridge that gap by providing practical experience, professional networks and pathways into public leadership for emerging scholars with the potential to make significant contributions to Australia's cultural, civic and policy landscape.
