Moreton Bay is one of South East Queensland’s greatest natural assets - a place of extraordinary biodiversity, cultural significance, and everyday connection for millions of people.
But beneath the surface, pressures are building.
Sediment and pollution wash down from the catchments with every rainfall, clouding the water, smothering seagrass meadows, and impacting ecosystems that support iconic species like turtles and dugongs. These changes are often gradual and difficult to see until the impacts become severe.
We’ve seen what can happen when things go wrong.
Recent large-scale algal blooms in South Australia have caused devastating losses of marine life. These events don’t happen overnight -they are the result of long-term declines in water quality and ecosystem resilience.
Here in Moreton Bay, we still have time to act.
The Moreton Bay Foundation recently led a major synthesis of scientific knowledge on sediment impacts in the Bay. This work brings together decades of research to clearly show how sediment affects the ecological, social and economic values of Moreton Bay - and where action is needed most.
But knowledge alone isn’t enough.
