The Heart Research Centre is an independent research organisation, with a goal of improving the lives of people living with cardiac disease and preventing further cardiac events.
Our focus on effective cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention means that we undertake research into the psychological, social and behavioural aspects of cardiovascular disease. Our studies involve patients with cardiovascular disease and the health professionals who work with these patients. We seek to understand what factors help in recovery, what makes for a better quality of life for these patients, how they can be assisted to modify risk behaviours and how they can be supported in self-management.
We strongly advocate evidence-led practice and with our commitment to translational research we use our research findings to develop novel programs to help patients and their families, particularly to assist with emotional and behavioural recovery after heart attack and heart surgery. Results from our research studies also inform our training programs which, in turn, improves the care offered to patients across Australia and internationally.
The Heart Research Centre is a partner research centre of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne and is recognised by the Australian Government Department of Health as an Independent Medical Research Institute.
