Who We Are
For more than 35 years, Hunter Community Legal Centre has stood beside people in our community when they have nowhere else to turn. Since 1991, we have provided free legal advice, assistance, and representation to those facing the greatest disadvantage across Newcastle and the Hunter region. We believe justice should never depend on someone’s income, background, or circumstances, yet for many, it does. That’s where we step in: breaking down barriers, restoring dignity, and ensuring that every person has a voice.
Our work goes beyond individual cases -it strengthens the fabric of our entire community. By standing with those most affected by disadvantage, we see firsthand where the system falls short, and we act to change it. From one piece of timely advice to advocacy for broader reform, the impact is real and lasting. Powered by a dedicated team of solicitors, volunteers, and partners, we turn small moments of support into life-changing outcomes because access to justice isn’t just important, it’s essential.
How We Help
When Sarah* fled domestic violence, she thought help was finally within reach.
But just days before her counselling appointment, it was taken away due to eligibility rules.
Left without support, she turned to Hunter Community Legal Centre.
We challenged the decision, restored her counselling and secured additional financial assistance to support her recovery.
Today, she is moving forward.
But many people across the Hunter still face legal barriers they cannot overcome alone.
For over 35 years, we’ve provided free legal help to vulnerable members of our community.
