Singing for Joy – High Street Bells Choir

The High Street Bells Choir is a unique community choir. It formed in 2010 with the specific aim of enabling people, regardless of ability, to benefit its members and to create a community through music.

Once you start singing, all your worries and pains just fly away. Scott

Many things bring people back each week – friendship, fun, generosity, the songs and the opportunity to learn and grow. The Choir gives its members a positive and 'normal' experience to share with others.

What I love about the choir is the warmth and acceptance of everyone. There's a wonderful feeling between all of us. Tanya

Some recent highlights include:

  • Community Group of the Year – City of Darebin Australia Day Awards
  • Singing for Joy, our first CD launched at the Darebin Music Feast
  • Raising over $2,600 for earthquake relief in Nepal
  • Performing at the Melbourne University Law School's Social Equity Conference
  • A steadily increasing membership & now 80 members including singers, carers, volunteers and family members.

The singers' joy and enthusiasm are contagious. Their collective talent, courage and determination are inspirational. The Choir helps to form social connection between those with disabilities and the wider community.

What is important about the Choir for me is the ability to give back to the world something that was taken away from me. Susan

Singing is good for you. It helps you breathe, gives you confidence, helps you relax and improves self-esteem. We have seen these benefits firsthand for many of our members.

Before the choir I could not talk and (I stayed) at home but now I can go out. Damien

Why we are collecting funds?

Dedicated volunteers keep the choir running, with fundraising activities and grants enabling us to meet essential costs. However, to guarantee the Choir's future, we are now reaching out to the wider community for assistance to ensure we can continue to employ our skilled workers and meet our expenses.

For example, for one week:

  • $10 provides tea and coffee for our singers
  • $40 covers venue hire costs
  • $125 pays our administrator's salary
  • $200 pays our musical director's salary
