'Mum died in hospital and I couldn't be there with her. I felt a huge sense of guilt, but then I found out that a Palhelp Hospice Volunteer was with her, talking to her and holding her hand, making sure she had a warm blanket and giving her drinks to sip. It made a huge difference to how I felt about Mum's death and it helped me to accept her death. Thank you to Hospice Volunteers!'
At Palhelp, we hear this so often! No-one should be alone in hospital or at home during the time that they are living with a terminal illness and no-one should die alone. At Palhelp we provide volunteers to visit patients in all hospital wards where there are palliative patients. We work across Southern Tasmania.
Our volunteers also visit at home, as companions, to be with your loved ones throughout their palliative illness, from week to week, bringing laughter, conversation and compassionate person to talk to.
In the crucial final days and hours of life, especially if your loved one is in a busy hospital environment, it can make all the difference to have some there to talk to you, to hold your hand to say 'It's ok, Im here just for you'.
Our service is free. Your donation is really needed now and can help us to reach more people who are living alone, in isolation or whose family carer would benefit so much from just a few hours respite each week.
Nobody needs to fee alone whe they are living and copig with a terminal illness. We can be there, especially when family can't.
We're here to listen and to be present, when nobody else can.

Hospice Volunteers South Tas acknowledges aboriginal people as the original and continuing custodians of the land on which we meet. Always was and always will be aboriginal land. We pay our respects to the Palawa ancestors and their descendents. We acknowledge their continuing deep connection to Land, Sea and Sky.
