VietFam works with families in south-west Brisbane to promote and maintain their children’s healthy development and well-being. Often Vietnamese-Australian families experience barriers to successful parenting, such as language barriers, lack of understanding to navigate systems or confidence to ask for support, and limited social and support networks.
More than 50% of people who seek assistance from us are experiencing Domestic and Family Violence (DFV). According to Queensland Health, domestic violence has been increasingly recognised a problem facing the Vietnamese community.[1] A Victorian Royal Commission into family violence identified that people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds experience more barriers when seeking help in situations of family and domestic violence[2].
VietFam offers bilingual support to build the confidence of families and their children to overcome these barriers and build their independence through:
· Advocacy and support to navigate health, education and social support systems
· Assistance to understand how to obtain assistance from translators
· Parenting skill development programs and excursions
· Community building workshops, activities and events
· Homework clubs and play groups
· Assistance with obtaining legal advice and access to specialist DFV services.
Your support will help us to create opportunities for Vietnamese-Australian children, young people and their families to live safe and happy lives, have access to education, healthcare, and employment and build strong social networks to sustain a positive future.
