Karinya House is a community based, not for profit organisation servicing the ACT and surrounding regions. The service operates on a twenty-four hour, seven days a week basis and is located in the ACT. Karinya supports women from Canberra and surrounding regional areas. It is the only residential and outreach service specifically for pregnant and parenting women in the region. We offer a secure and caring environment for women who are pregnant, or parenting newborn babies and are without appropriate support and accommodation.
Our 24/7 service includes:
Karinya House provides safe accommodation for our clients, where required, emotional and practical support during and after pregnancy, as well as security and safety. Security may come in the form of financial support, accommodation or emotional security. For many of our clients, Karinya House is the only source of support and care that they have.
Karinya House fosters a strong ethos of supporting our clients to make the best possible choice for themselves. Karinya is a non-religious, non-government and, most importantly, non-judgemental organisation. This is an important point of difference for a lot of clients in making the decision to seek help from Karinya.
Our new purpose built Home has been commenced. With the generous support of the ACT Government, construction has started. It is estimated that the new Home for Karinya House will be completed by early 2016.
Once completed, Karinya House will lease our new Home form Housing ACT.
It is nearly 18 years since Karinya House commenced operation on 29 September, 1997. As many of our supporters are aware, this new Home has been a long term vision of the organisation and we are proud that it is coming to fruition.
The new Home will double Karinya's residential accommodation capacity, as well as providing a designated area for the provision of outreach support including our groups program.
This purpose built Home exemplifies best practice with collaborative partnerships encompassing community, corporate and government sectors. This relationship is critical to the provision of residential and outreach support to the most vulnerable women in our community.
The move for Karinya House will also involve renewed funding endeavours in partnership with government, private and corporate sectors. The relocation and service re-establishment costs will require significant corporate and community support, both financially and in-kind.
We estimate transition costs to be around $200,000 and annual service operating costs to increase by around $400,000 per annum. We have secured 50% of our increased annual operating costs through recurrent ACT Government Funding but as our funding model states, we are seeking 50% additional annual funding from our community of donors.
Karinya House is supported by private individuals and corporate sponsors, and their generosity is acknowledged through our publicity and promotion.
We welcome all donations, and would love to speak with you if you or your organisation is in a position to support Karinya in a small or large way, and we can make a commitment to get together and work out some kind of mutually beneficial partnership.
