The Kids Plus Foundation provides high quality, intensive therapy for babies, children and teenagers with physical disabilities, in particular Cerebral palsy, brain injury and stroke, to assist with the daily functional activities the rest of us take for granted. These are coordination, mobility, communication, eating, play and self care; in order to support choice, participation, inclusion and access to education; to support health and wellbeing; and to help each child reach their potential and live as independently as possible. There is no cost to families and priority is for babies and younger children, and for children from families in low socioeconomic situations.
Kids Plus relies on your donations, fundraising and grants to provide this essential service. Kids Plus is not eligible for and does not receive any government funding.
The Kids Plus Therapy Program comprises weekly therapy of physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech pathology depending on the needs of each child. Each child is treated individually, with their program designed for their specific needs, and with measurable goals and outcomes each term. There are four programs per year in Geelong, Victoria.
Cerebral palsy is the most common, physical disability in childhood. It is a permanent disability that affects movement and control of muscles. Cerebral palsy results from damage to the developing brain, usually before birth. In Australia, a child is born with Cerebral palsy every 18 hours. There is no known cure, and for most, the cause is unknown. The impact on an individual child ranges from severely affected quadriplegic through to hemiplegia (one side of the body), diplegia (lower limbs only) to mildly affected (one limb or less affected areas). Speech, swallowing (affecting eating and drinking), and eye control can also be impacted. Cerebral palsy is not an intellectual disability although some of these children may have other special needs and in some cases very complex medical issues.
Kids Plus has between 60- 70 eligible children requesting a place per term. Of these, 85% have Cerebral palsy, and 55 children are under the age of 6 yrs old.
Kids Plus Therapy Program was developed in response to the glaring lack of regular high quality therapy that is essential to the health, wellbeing and functionality for these babies and children with physical disabilities. 90% of the children significantly progress or achieve their goals each term.
