On a quiet morning walk in Hackham, a local woman and her toddler stumbled upon something no one should ever have to see — four tiny kittens, tied inside a garbage bag and left to die. One of those kittens, little Madoc, did not make it. His three siblings are still in our care today, fighting for the future they almost never had.
This is the reality of street cat rescue.
At Hisses to Purrs, we have been working since 2021 to reduce the unowned cat population across the southern suburbs of Adelaide, rescuing over 700 cats and kittens from a life on the streets — all within a 25-minute radius of Morphett Vale. Every single one of them deserved a chance. We show up to give them that chance, no matter what it takes.
But the past few months have been amongst the hardest we have faced. We lost beloved Pip to sudden heart failure, just weeks before Madoc passed away from a highly contagious disease — a loss that immediately required us to vaccinate 18 kittens to protect them from the same fate. We nursed little Bethany back from a frightening illness, spending over $1,500 on her care alone — and we are so glad we did, because she is now thriving in her new forever home. Add in a complex cryptorchid surgery and the ongoing costs of desexing, and in just one month we have spent over $6,000, all but emptying our reserves.
We are not asking you to fix everything. We are asking you to help us be ready for what is coming.
Kitten season begins in September, and with it comes a surge of vulnerable, unowned kittens born into a life on the street. Without funding, we cannot take them in, provide vet care, or give them the safe start they deserve. We are aiming to raise $5,000 to rebuild our resources and walk into kitten season prepared — not overwhelmed.
If Madoc's story moved you, if Bethany's recovery gave you hope, or if you simply believe that no animal should be tied in a garbage bag and forgotten — please consider making a donation today. Every dollar goes directly to the cats and kittens who need us most.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Your kindness is what keeps us going, and what keeps them alive.
