Staff and inmates at Macquarie Correctional Centre will run the equivalent of an Olympic marathon in a bid to raise vital funds to help seriously ill children living in regional and remote NSW, access life-saving healthcare in the city hospitals.
The 42.2km test of endurance will take place on the 6th and 7th of September 2025, with participants running 212 laps of the centre’s sporting field either individually or as part of a relay team.
Little Wings is a non-for-profit organisation, that provides a FREE, SAFE, Professional service to seriously ill children from regional and rural NSW, the ACT and QLD. On a daily basis, we provide air and ground transport, enabling access to life-saving medical treatment via the Sydney Children's Hospital Network, John Hunter Children's Hospital, Newcastle, Royal Far West, Manly and Queensland Children’s Hospital. Ultimately, providing access to services that are otherwise unavailable in their hometowns.
Little Wings focus on keeping families united and easing the emotional and financial burdens, travel fatigue and isolation, associated with caring for a seriously ill child over long periods of time. We understand children recover better and faster at home. So, there aim to get them there promptly upon hospital discharge.
Little Wings dedicated team and volunteer Pilots, Drivers and Event crew work tirelessly to ensure that each journey is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
“Little Wings has grown 400% in the past 4 years, growing from 429 missions to 2371 missions. As Little Wings grows, helping more children, we need the community support to help fuel our planes,” said Clare Pearson.
“We hope the money raised can fuel the planes, helping more seriosuly ill children, throughout their treatment and beyond.”
Marathon training has been underway at the centre, with inmates undergoing rigorous practice runs, exercise regimes and aerobic exercise.
