Every year during Ramadan Mahboba's Promise distributes food to the poor and destitute of Afghanistan. In a country where half of pre-school children are malnourished needs are immediate. However, securing the basics of food and shelter is just the start of the journey. With the assistance and the vocational support we provide, children can go to school, women and youth can learn a skill. This is the beginning of empowerment and the path to becoming self-sufficient.

Humanity Starts With You- A message from Mahboba

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Baraatuh, Brothers and Sisters

Recently I made a trip to Afghanistan. I remember preparing myself. I knew that I would see children on the street who would plead with me for money and food, but I was to remind myself that I cannot possibly feed them all. I knew that I had to pass them by, despite the overwhelming guilt I would feel.

As I expected, when I arrived at the airport, the children would not let me go. They kept saying, please miss my brothers, sisters and mother are very hungry. With extreme difficulty I had to close my eyes to their innocent and sorrowful expressions.

Then, not long before I made the return journey to Australia, at our monthly distribution of provisions to widows and children, desperation once again tested me. While we have enough to cater for the 200 or so women under our care, there were an overwhelming number who came in the hope of something.

As the women and children sat outside in the courtyard in the winter cold, all pleading for my help, it was too much to cope with. There was nothing I could do but hide.

At that time I decided when I got back to Australia I would make it my goal to launch a drive for 500 more sponsorships. I simply have to bring more of these desperate cases under the care of my organisation.

This Ramadan I ask you to look into your hearts and give generously to those unfortunates in Afghanistan.
