About this cause

Marrickville Legal Centre has supported our community from the inner west and across New South Wales for 43 years. Since opening in 1979, MLC has helped many thousands of people who traditionally experience barriers to our justice system – including people with a disability, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, people experiencing domestic violence and people at risk of homelessness.

We are running our annual EOFY fundraising appeal and asking you to support our not-for-profit legal services.

Thanks to you, we can continue to innovate #accesstojustice to create better and fairer outcomes for all.

We rely on community support to strengthen the services we provide to people who experience financial hardship and disadvantage. With your financial support, we’re able to do more of what’s important to us – supporting people in their time of need.

We’re doing great things thanks to your support

  1. We’re innovating Access To Justice
We’re for progress and challenge the status quo to improve #accestojustice. Recently recognised as finalists for Innovator of the Year 2022 at the Not-For-Profit Tech Awards, Marrickville Legal Centre’s virtual legal assistant NALA is streamlining intake for legal advice, autogenerating legal documents, and providing vital legal information on tenancy, traffic and strata law. This financial year NALA provided over 2700 sessions. Our e-learning resource Savvy Finance is helping women to discretely identify the signs of financial abuse and understand how they can seek help.

  2. We’re for working together
We work with stakeholders across government, social and corporate sectors to create shared value, such as pro bono programs and Health Justice Partnerships. This results in services that make the best use of resources for people in need of legal assistance in Sydney’s inner west, south and south west – and for young people and strata owner-occupiers state-wide.

  3. Our services are holistic
Simple problems that are not addressed can lead to complex ones. As a generalist legal service, all our clients are guided through a Legal Health Check. This tool helps us to identify all red flags that can stand in the way of someone’s legal wellbeing, not only their immediate needs. We also work towards systemic change through legal education and law reform, seeking to address the root causes of recurring legal problems for people who experience barriers to accessing justice.

  4. We’re free for all
Justice shouldn’t be the privilege of the few individuals who can afford a private solicitor. Justice is for us all. We’re proud to stand with individuals who are disadvantaged by our justice system, helping them toward better & fairer outcomes. We aim to resolve any immediate legal issues and to link our clients to resources and services that will support them towards positive and lasting change in their lives, and in our community.
