Marrickville Legal Centre

Marrickville Legal Centre Support Appeal

Marrickville Legal Centre

For over 37 years Marrickville Legal Centre (MLC) has been dedicated to providing free legal advice and assistance to those most in need in the community.

Since opening in 1979, MLC has helped thousands of people who would otherwise have nowhere to go for help – including people with a disability, people with limited English language literacy, people experiencing domestic violence and people at risk of homelessness.

Demand for our services continues to grow as unskilled jobs are lost, housing prices soar and domestic violence reaches epidemic proportions. Without access to legal assistance, problems can spiral out of control, leading to sometimes tragic outcomes for those most at risk.

Please help us continue to help those most in need.

All donations will be used to increase our frontline services.

Future Funding

MLC’s funding has fallen in real terms over the past ten years, making it impossible to meet the ever-growing need for our services.

We are also bracing ourselves for a national funding cut of 30% next year, which would mean the loss of staff for MLC.

Any cut in MLC's funding will mean a direct cut to frontline legal services, entrenching social and economic disadvantage and causing problems to spiral for the most vulnerable in our community.

Our Work

MLC covers 12 local government areas in the inner west and southern suburbs of Sydney, with a combined population of over 1.1 million people. This means that approximately 1 in 20 people living in Australia lives in MLC's catchment area.

We help the most socially and economically disadvantaged members of our community, who would otherwise have nowhere to go for help. Our services include:

  • Domestic and family violence support and assistance
  • Tenancy advice and advocacy
  • A state-wide youth legal service helping young people in trouble with  debt, fines, family issues and offences
  • Family dispute resolution and parenting arrangements
  • Employment law including unfair dismissals, underpayment of wages and entitlements, and bullying and harassment in the workplace
  • Debt and unpaid fines
  • Motor vehicle accidents

Simple problems that are not addressed can lead to complex ones. An unpaid fine can lead to a massive debt and unfair eviction can lead to homelessness. Access to legal advice and assistance can stop a slide into poverty and despair – promoting social justice and a fairer, safer society for all.

We also work towards systemic change through legal education and law reform, seeking to address the root causes of recurring legal problems for the most vulnerable in our community.

Give now and help Marrickville Legal Centre continue to provide vital legal services to the most vulnerable in our community.
