At just 4 months old, Maserati has already been through more than any kitten should.
This sweet little girl was found with her front leg stuck in a car engine, causing a severe brachial plexus injury that left her entire right forelimb paralysed.
The brachial plexus is a group of nerves that connects the spinal cord to the nerves supplying the front leg. When these nerves are badly damaged, the leg can lose its ability to move and feel normally. In Maserati’s case, the injury was severe enough that she was unable to use her right front leg at all.
We initially hoped that the nerves might recover with time, so Maserati underwent 8 weeks of strict cage rest while we waited and monitored her progress. Unfortunately, despite giving her every opportunity to heal, her leg remained completely paralysed.
At that point, amputation was the kindest option for her. A permanently paralysed limb can become painful, traumatised or infected, and removing it would allow Maserati to move comfortably and get on with being the playful kitten she is.
Maserati is a beautiful, sweet and incredibly affectionate girl who loves people, cuddles and playtime. She purrs loudly, throws herself into life with enthusiasm, and has adapted amazingly well to life on three legs.
Her injury may have changed her body, but it certainly hasn't changed her spirit.
