MUHI is an independent, non-profit and non-partisan registered Australian charity run by over 200 young people, from different socioeconomic backgrounds and various academic disciplines (Arts, Medicine, Biomedicine, Science, Education, Commerce, Public Health and more) at the University of Melbourne. It was founded on September 2, 2011 and represents young people from all over the world, domestic and international, undergraduate and postgraduate members, all united with one passion: to improve health and educational outcomes.
MUHI operates with many subprograms, each forming its own independent initiative, these include:
Student Welfare Outreach Team (SWOT): The mission of SWOT is to reduce educational inequity in Victoria, namely by providing free, or very low cost, tutoring services to Victorian Curriculum of Education (VCE) students who experience educational disadvantage.
Kenyan Village Medical Education Program (KVME): KVME is a student-led, not-for-profit initiative that delivers preventative health education workshops to rural and remote Kenyan communities, with the aim of empowering them to improve their health outcomes.
Material Aid Program (MAP): MAP is a student-run initiative that redistributes surplus medical equipment and consumables from hospitals and clinics in metropolitan Melbourne to underresourced healthcare organisations in developing countries.
Global Health Mentoring Program (GHMP): GHMP establishes opportunities for students to interact and connect with health professionals in their respective areas of interest. The aim of this program is to allow students to learn and develop insights about global health from the lens of their mentor in addition to other mentees through a structured program.
Public Lectures: MUHI runs a regular series of public lectures on topics targeting a wide audience. It aims to create a bridge between the health industries and our wider community.
Australian World Health Organisation Conference (AusWHO): The Australian World Health Organization Conference (AusWHO) is an annual three-day conference in Melbourne where university students from all disciplines will tackle a global health issue as a representative of a United Nations member state or non-governmental organization. Over the weekend, delegates will collaborate to build resolutions during plenary and regional sessions, requiring negotiation, research, strategy and overarching cooperation.
Global Health Case Competition (GHCC): GHCC offers students from all disciplines the opportunity to formulate and present solutions to some of the world’s most pressing global health issues.
