Save Treasure Island From Salmon Farm Pollution

About this cause

Tasmania is the jewel of the Great Southern Ocean, a unique wilderness of astonishingly beautiful bays, inlets, beaches and rivers with incredible wildlife; a genuine treasure island. But these treasures are under attack.

Foreign-owned Atlantic salmon companies are releasing tonnes of antibiotics, chemicals, feed waste and faeces into rivers and inshore waterways, creating an industrial fish biomass that suffocates marine species and habitat, contaminates beaches and bays, and subjects coastal communities to 24/7 industrial noise and light pollution.

Our goal is to save Tasmania's unique natural waterways and marine life from this harm. It is achieved by influencing the practices of industry and regulators, and the decisions of government, consumers and the general public.

Every dollar helps us achieve just that; Saving Treasure Island.

Your donations are maximised through the work of our volunteer committee and campaign team, along with the incredible work of our paid campaigner. Since 2015 NOFF has proved itself as an effective and professional NGO dedicated to change.  Our members are united by the deep belief that our communities and natural environments should not be exploited or harmed and this is reflected in our campaigns and all that we do.

Please visit our website at www.noff.au for more information.

Holding industry and government to account, and changing farming practices can achieve;

  • A reduction in marine pollution from micro plastics, AGVET chemicals, fecal nitrogen and ethoxyquin.
  • Preservation of inshore waterways, reef habitats and sea grasses.
  • Protection of the endangered Maugean Skate, Hand Fish, Fur Seals, Dolphins and Sea Dragons.
  • Restoration of amenity for coastal communities impacted by 24/7 industrial noise and light pollution.
  • A sustainable industry transition out of shallow coastal waters adopting best practice around the world.
  • An accountable Environmental Protection Authority operating within an effective regulatory frame work.
  • An educated and informed Australian consumer making genuinely sustainable choices rather than succumbing to greenwashing and distorted industry health messages.
  • An end to the needless suffering farmed carnivorous fish endure from triploid deformations, disease, mechanical overhandling, overpopulation, confinement and suffocation in plastic net pens.
  • A stop to ever diminishing biodiversity as we over produce a singular species at the cost of the natural environment.
