Operation Smile Australia Ltd (OSA) is a private not-for-profit volunteer medical services organisation providing reconstructive surgery and related health care to children and young adults born with severe, yet rectifiable, cranio-facial deformities in developing countries. OSA brings together Australian health professionals with the public and private health sectors to provide voluntary care to improve the quality of life for the children, families and communities that share in the Operation Smile experience, and continues to create and foster international partnerships, build trust, bridge cultures and bestow dignity at home and abroad.
OSA was founded in 1999 by renowned Queensland plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr Richard Lewandowski, and his wife Sue Lewandowski. Since then OSA and its expanding teams of Australian medical, nursing and allied healthcare volunteers have assisted in improving the lives of more than 3000 children in the following countries: Vietnam, India and China.
