Outcomes Australia

Better Off

The Problem

One in three Australian adults and a quarter of Australian children are overweight or obese. One Australian develops diabetes every five minutes. If weight gain continues at current levels, by 2025, close to 80% of all Australian adults and 33% of all children will be overweight or obese.

The obesity epidemic isn't just about the impact on overweight individuals. It will cost taxpayers $87 billion over the next 10 years, and seriously threatens our health systems ability to provide basic care for future generations. Healthcare costs are already rising at four times the price of inflation, and it is hitting each and every one of us in the hip pocket, while also eroding our access to the care we need. We must act now.

What can we do?

What if we could put some of Australia's top business experts, doctors, lawyers, nutritionists, academics, community leaders, behavioural change experts, former food industry executives, urban planners, marketers, policy makers, government relations experts and others to the task of finding world's best practice in addressing obesity in targeted segments of the population?

The Better Off project is doing just that. We are looking at solutions from a different angle, with an aim of disrupting the current approach in order to achieve quantum change.

Once leading practice has been identified and articulated, Better Off will use business principles to make ensure reform actually happens. We hold each other to account for the delivery of real outcomes and bang for buck for the Australian public. We cannot wait for government to solve this problem for us, and we don't need more committees, taskforces or watered-down recommendations sitting on the shelf.

Outcomes projects aim to work themselves out of existence. The Outcomes Model delivers value for the community through professionals at the top of their fields volunteering their time and effort. However, in order to maximise the impact of these resources, we need to cover the basics...

What can YOU do?

We need your help to pay for a full time project coordinator to get the best over our pro bono network and ensure the project delivers for the community. These will be our only overheads, so every dollar spent will enable teams of dedicated experts to work efficiently and effectively towards delivering outcomes.
