Parklands Albury Wodonga has been protecting, connecting and restoring nature across the regional park network for 27 years. Climate change impacts of severe storms, floods, bushfires, heatwaves and drought are stressing our natural landscapes, pushing their resilience to the edge.
On Friday 9th January 2026, the Upper Murray bushfires burnt through 37km of the High Country Rail Trail, reducing 25 years of collective efforts by the volunteer Tallangatta Rail Trail Advisory Group, hundreds of volunteers and many of Parklands Albury Wodonga partners to dust. Five years of milling and restoring five trestle bridges along this scenic visitor attraction and key wildlife corridor were reduced to a pile of steel rod, nuts and bolts.
Our community is grieving the loss of 14 of the 16 remaining 110 year old historic trestle bridges.
With your help, Parklands Albury Wodonga and partners will fast track the rebuild and reopen the High Country Rail Trail. With funds for materials, fences will be rebuilt, repaired and low-level bridges installed as interim crossings of two key waterways.
Short videos will be created of each of the lost trestle bridges, with QR codes located on site for visitors to experience the trestle bridges that once were via their mobile phones.
