Mobile GP's aim is to improve the health for homeless and marginalised people to assist them in breaking the cycle of homelessness. It is a fully accredited general practice, established in January 2008, and provides primary healthcare by conducting clinics in drop-in centres and shelters. All medical equipment normally found in a GP surgery, including resuscitation equipment, is taken to the centres for each clinic.
Two years ago, in addition to the above, it established a Transition Clinic located in West Leederville, for those who are transitioning out of homelessness.
Patients and their support workers in the centres where the services are provided have embraced the primary health care services provided by Mobile GP. A full physical and mental health screen by a primary health care provider is now part of the assessment of all patients who agree to undertake it. Many previously undiagnosed physical and mental health problems are being identified and managed successfully with positive outcomes.
According to the 2011 census data about 10,000 people in WA are homeless. Of those 40% are under 25 years and 25% are under 18 years. A homeless person has a life expectancy of 45 years compared to the average Australian who can expect to live to 80 years.
