Australia is one of the world’s worst pesticide polluters. We spray toxic pesticides, many of which are banned overseas, on our crops, in public spaces, parks, beaches, and hospitals.
Hazardous pesticides are causing biodiversity loss, soil degradation, drinking water contamination, pollinator decline and climate change acceleration.
Pesticides are linked with multiple serious, long-term health issues such as cancers in adults and children, Parkinson’s Disease, fertility decline, endocrine disruption, autoimmune diseases, allergies, gut health conditions and more. Pesticide exposure is also linked to mental health problems and suicidal tendencies.
Many pesticides are coated in PFAS, aka forever chemicals, leading to intergenerational harm.
Pesticides are a key contributor to the climate crisis. We are in a cycle of intensive agriculture exacerbating climate change. More sustainable agroecology practices eliminate fossil fuel petroleum-based products and sequester atmospheric carbon in the soil, combating the climate crisis.
Australia’s federal regulator, the APVMA, is 87% funded by industry - Australia is the only country in the OECD to be majority-funded by industry. Inevitably, it has been repeatedly accused of being industry-captured.
Please support Pesticide Action Australia, a newly-formed charity dedicated to reducing the harm caused by hazardous pesticides, and join the growing movement of Australians wanting to transition to more sustainable alternatives.
