About this cause

Why we’re walking 230km for Pets In The Park

In July this year, we’ll be walking the full 230km Larapinta Trail through the Northern Territory — day after day, carrying everything we need, sleeping under the stars — to raise funds for Pets In The Park (PITP).

I’m Esther, a veterinarian and volunteer with PITP since 2014, and Senior Veterinarian at the Darlinghurst clinic. Volunteering at our clinic is some of the most meaningful work I do. We may not be a high profile charity, but the impact we have is huge. We help care for the pets of people experiencing homelessness — and in doing so, support the deep bond between animals and their humans, often their most important relationship.

Our Darlinghurst clinic is the largest and busiest of the 12 PITP clinics. Many of our patients rely on long-term, life-saving medications for conditions like heart disease. As the cost-of-living crisis deepens, demand is growing — and so are medication costs. These animals depend on us, and we depend entirely on donations to keep treatment going.

I’m walking alongside my nephew Ethan, who is completing the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. This expedition brings together our shared love of the outdoors and a cause that truly matters.

Every dollar raised will go directly toward providing ongoing veterinary care and essential medications for vulnerable pets and their people. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to help sustain the Darlinghurst program into the years ahead.

Every step we take — and every dollar you give — helps keep pets healthy, with the vulnerable people who love them most. Thank you for supporting Pets In The Park.

UPDATE FROM ESTHER (Friday June 12):

I've been training by doing long dog walks, rock climbing and doing combo body weight/weight lifting exercises to strengthen my core and legs for the trail ahead. Ethan has been doing multi-level training with his usual AFL, sailing and some walking as well. Cross-training is super helpful for the trail as it strengthens you in all areas. We will be getting perishables on the weekend before heading up to the NT on Friday - report and photos to follow when we're done.
