About this cause

Phoenix Australia - Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health promotes recovery for the 15 million Australians affected by trauma.

Traumatic events are common - most people will experience at least one, such as a natural disaster, accident, or sexual assault. Most people recover quickly with the help of family and friends. But for some, the effects can be long-lasting.

Trauma can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug use, relationship problems, reduced capacity to work.

We know that good outcomes are possible for people who experience trauma. With your gift, together we can:

  • promote recovery
  • reduce suffering
  • reduce the effects on families
  • improve capacity for work, study, and other meaningful activities
  • improve mental health

Who we are and what we do

Phoenix Australia is an international leader in posttraumatic mental health, using the latest research to improve wellbeing and build stronger communities.

Our world class research advances the knowledge of trauma and mental health. We translate research into education and training programs, and policy and service advice to promote the best outcomes for people affected by trauma. We work with organisations that have responsibility for people affected by trauma to ensure that proven interventions are promoted through their policies and practice. We develop and deliver education and training programs on posttraumatic mental health.

Our website has information about the effects of trauma, how people recover, how to help yourself or support someone else who has experienced trauma, and about the most effective treatments.

Examples of our work

  • development of the national guidelines for the treatment of PTSD
  • development of a mental health and wellbeing app for police
  • research into the effectiveness of counselling for veterans with mental health problems
  • development of a training program to help deliver better treatment to veteran patients
  • development of a self-care website for ex-serving Defence members and their families
  • investigation into the relationship between trauma and homelessness
  • development of a framework for homelessness agencies to use a trauma informed approach in their work.

Your gift will support our work to improve the wellbeing and quality of life for individuals and communities who experience trauma.
