Thanks to your donations, Project Kolkata's has succeeded open the Santiniketan Education Centre, run by our local partner the Institute of Social Work in West Bengal, India.

The Santiniketan education centre is now a full time school to 60 children, extra curricular education centre for a further 60 children aged 6 to 14. The centre also provides 2 nutritious daily meals and health care 7 days per week.

The centre's students belong to the most under-privileged class of the community; the children of domestic workers, rickshaw pullers and day labourers who reside in a slum community along the local railway track. The goal of the centre is to provide education and support of these children who would otherwise be marginalized from schooling, to the point of enrollment and integration in mainstream education and to create a safe and healthy environment.

The cost of running the Santiniketan Education Centre 7 days a week with teachers, educational materials, food and a cook is AU$6000 per year. View the Centre Budget and FAQ's.

Project Kolkata is committed to raising a further $6000 annually for the Santiniketan Education Centre to continue to operate.

Employment Opportunities: Barasat is a district town with a population of over 500,000 people and 60 km away from Kolkata City. The town is growing with number of malls, high rise buildings and departmental stores. Each of these establishments requires computer literate employees for shops and stores. Women employees are always in demand. Speaking to some of the shop owners it appears that there is dearth of computer literate job seekers. Regarding self-employment, there is also scope for home based work with a growing number of small business operations and newly started offices working with limited space and not wanting to increase their number of employees, often giving out work on contractual basis.
