Health and wellbeing in remote Indigenous communities

About this cause

Red Dust inspires remote Indigenous communities through a unique ‘community-as-family’ model of health and well-being programs. For over twenty-five years we have walked alongside community leaders and Elders to create a stronger future for youth and their families. We draw on the strengths of both western health knowledge and traditional cultural knowledges that influence young people in community. Our positive role models combined with engaging, high-impact programs help build resilience in young people and inspire them to identify and pursue their dreams. We also work together with Australians more broadly to build cross-cultural competency through tailored training and immersion experiences.

Remote Indigenous health challenges are exacerbated by the tyranny of distance but more so by the challenge of walking in two vastly different cultural worlds. ‘Closing the Gap’ in Indigenous health is a well-known national challenge.

How we work

Our Community-as-Family health model provides a modern framework for program service delivery in remote and urban communities. It fosters sustainable service development through inclusive consultation and a commitment to local capacity building. By tapping into established relationships — be it family, kinship, cultural, socio-historical, or language groups — it uses a strengths-based approach to inform and elevate our service delivery.

Our programs

Our programs seek to address culture and spirituality and local mental health & well-being practices by placing value on both Western and Traditional knowledge and creating space for both to be part of a holistic approach to health and well-being improvement. Community programs are currently delivered together with 15 remote communities across the Top End and Central Desert regions of the Northern Territory. Additional programs are delivered in both Alice Springs and Darwin.

  • Healthy Living Program for youth aged 5-12 years
  • Strong Young Womens Program for 12+ years
  • Strong Young Men & Boys program for 12+ years
  • Storytelling Program for Elders & Custodians 50+ years.

Our Storytelling Program is The final stage of our intergenerational approach, collects, collates, and endorses millenia-old cultural knowledges for use in all our programs and as a guide for future generations.

We acknowledge the diverse and complex societies of the lands on which we live and work. We thank First Nations peoples for their friendship and trust as we work together to enrich lives, improve health and strengthen the future.
