Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is one of the seven natural wonders of the World. World Heritage-listed for its ecological significance, exceptional biodiversity and natural beauty, the GBR is the world's largest coral reef ecosystem.
Back to back bleaching events in 2016 & 2017 were the most widespread and severe ever recorded. Now more than ever the GBR needs a legal pathway to secure its future survival.
With your support the Great Barrier Reef can have the type of legal protection it needs and deserves. Changing the legal status of nature can help people protect the ecosystems most precious to them.
Today the GBR is facing multiple threats due to climate change, coral bleaching, coastal development, agricultural run off, increased shipping traffic and port expansions. These impacts are compromising the balance of the ecosystem and decreasing the natural habitat of the many species that directly contribute to the GBR’s health and wellbeing. Each of these has a negative effect on the GBR’s resilience and significantly extends its’ recovery cycle. A new generation of nature laws are needed to secure future protection.
EDO NQ is working towards gaining recognition for legal standing of the Reef by developing rights of nature laws. Without legal standing, the environment is simply a resource ripe for exploitation without regard for its intrinsic worth and with disregard for our common future.
