This month, CAPS is launching a new domestic violence prevention program in Sydney's Inner West, and we need your help.
One in five women in Australia has experienced sexual violence, and one in three has experienced physical violence. In fact, domestic violence is so prevalent that it is the leading preventable contributor to death in women ages 15-44.
Women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities are among the most at risk.
Women from CALD communities experiencing domestic violence face barriers such as financial dependency, fear of police, lack of family support, and few linguistically diverse services. This is why when staff at CAPS noticed the lack of culturally inclusive domestic violence programs, we created Safe Arrival.
The aim of Safe Arrival is to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and provide important harm prevention skills for refugee and migrant women in local communities in Sydney's Inner West. Through a culturally safe setting, using material provided in multiple languages, participants learn about the escalating nature of abuse, and how to access support services if needed. The program is delivered by expert staff and psychologists, and provides support in an accessible and respectful format to prevent the harm that domestic violence can cause for CALD mothers and children.
