The incredible community leaders Rose and Tahani from Sisters Support are sharing about their peer-led, culturally safe network at the 4th Australia and New Zealand Refugee Trauma Recovery in Resettlement Conference – a bi-national, sector-leading conference focused on refugee trauma recovery and resettlement practice, policy, research, and lived experience.
With your support, Rose and Tahani will be able to share their experiences of the obstacles and pathways to recovery, as well as their scalable approach to peer-led healing initiatives, in their presentation on 'Stories of Healing and Integration in the African Refugee Communities in Australia' to practitioners, researchers, community leaders, and government stakeholders from across Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.
More about Sisters Support and their conference presentation:
Sisters Support is a peer-led group empowering African women to connect, support each other, heal & advocate for their needs to build capacity and improve their overall well-being. The project, auspiced by Support Groups Qld and funded by the South Primary Health Network in Brisbane, aims to address these unmet needs by creating a peer-led, culturally safe network where African women can share experiences, access resources, and support one another.
The Sisters Support peer-led network was established in response to the significant and persistent challenges faced by African refugee women in Brisbane, particularly those impacted by domestic violence, trauma, and the complexities of resettlement. Many women arrive in Australia with hopes for safety and a better future, yet continue to experience gender-based violence, social isolation, and exclusion from opportunities due to ongoing gender inequities and systemic barriers. Issues such as racism, language difficulties, unemployment, and lack of culturally appropriate services further compound their vulnerability and hinder their ability to heal and thrive.
