About Stars Foundation

Our vision is to break the cycle of intergenerational disadvantage and see Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young women able to choose thier path and participate fully and confidently in the Australian community, enjoying social, cultural and economic well-being.

The Stars Foundation improves education and health outcomes by providing long-term, intensive, in-school mentoring and engagement programs focused on four key areas of personal development - Education, Training and Employment; Healthy Lifestyles; Community, Culture and Leadership; Well-being.

We currently support around 1000 First Nations young women in 17 partner schools in NT, QLD and VIC. The Stars Development Plan 2019-2021 aims to over double our number of participants to support around 2,500 young women in more locations by the end of 2021.

Our model is based on the best available evidence and years of experience, and is specifically tailored to address the needs of First Nations young women. Since 2016 we have seen consistently outstanding results across our programs - increased attendance, completion of Year 12 and successful transition to further study or work. Young women in the Stars program, parents, guardians, teachers and community services also report increased confidence and self-belief, strengthened connections to community and cultures, and improved overall health and well-being.

In 2019:

  • Stars students had an average attendance rate of 84%, with particularly strong results in remote schools - compared to Indigenous attendance average of 73% at our partner schools
  • 91% of Stars students completed Year 12 - compared to national Indigenous rate of just 65%
  • Stars students completing Year 12 in 2019 are now being supported in thier transition to high-education or employment - In 2018, over 90% of our Alumni were in further study or work, compared to national Indigenous rate of only 41%

How You Can Help

Your generosity will help us to continue our important work and see more First Nations young women across Australia with access to high-quality education and engagement programs.

When you support Stars Foundation, you can be assured that over 90% of our overall funding is spent directly on the girls we support, with less than 10% spent on administration. The cost of raising money and managing grant funding as a percentage of our overall funding for 2019 was just 5%.

Your contribution will help to Close the Gap on Indigenous disadvantage by educating and empowering young First Nations women to make active choices towards realising their full potential, and see improved economic, health and social outcomes, not just for the girls themselves, but also for their future families and wider communities.
