Steps & Holes is building a community to help us take One Giant Leap. Your contribution will support our program of physically dynamic, intellectually rigorous, visually arresting theatre and ensure the company’s unique presence in the Australian arts landscape.
The repertoire of Steps & Holes centres around the unique and powerful vision of director, performer and writer Kate Walder. An award-winning theatre-maker working at the intersection of movement, text, music, puppetry and visual imagery, Kate’s exciting, dynamic work attracts broad audiences of all ages by combining intimacy with a sense of the epic. Steps & Holes explores timeless and universal themes and believes in the ability of art to mend the social fabric of society.
The company launched in 2021 with our One Small Step campaign, a nod to Kate’s brave astronaut character which she brought back from her training in Paris and to the motifs of the stars, moon and cosmos that always appear in her work. In the first four years, we focussed on creating and presenting new works of theatre, achieving industry recognition and diversifying our funding streams. We have now reached a watershed moment in the life of the company and are ready to take One Giant Leap.
In 2025 we developed and secured presentation for two key projects; PILGRIM, a journey through Rome, Athens and Jerusalem and NOSES ARE RED, an original absurdist piece of political satire. In 2026, PILGRIM will premiere in the Adelaide Fringe at Fool's Paradise and Goodwood Theatres and NOSES ARE RED will be presented in Sydney. We will also expand our Emerging Artist Programs in partnership with Legs On The Wall and the Australian Theatre for Young People.
