A project to replace asbestos roof tiles with Welsh slate on St John's Church

For over 170 years St John’s parishioners and others have had the privilege of preserving the fabric and furnishings of the heritage church for future generations.

St John’s must replace the church roof with slate in 2019. In 1960, asbestos cement roof tiles replaced the deteriorated timber shingles. Now, almost sixty years later, the replacement of the church roof is urgent.

One major hailstorm could render the church unusable because no repair work can be carried out on the asbestos tiles. The tile surface area is at risk of breaking down with the potential of releasing asbestos into the environment.

However, this work is beyond the capacity of the congregation at this time. We now invite donors who have benefited from the foresight and selfless dedication of others to continue the conservation of St John’s Church, so that it remains a vibrant and active centre for worship, for community and for future generations to engage with Canberra’s continuing history.
