The Blake Society fulfils a vital role in the cultural life of Australia by encouraging people to engage with themes of belief, humanity and justice through a range of contemporary artistic and literary media. The Society was established in 1951, along with the Blake Prize, which is now one of Australia's oldest and most popular art prizes.
Within the general term `Blake Prize´ there are currently four awards:
- The $25,000 Blake Prize $25,000 is awarded to an art work of any artistic genre that responds to the deeper questions of contemporary culture and society.
- The $5,000 John Coburn Emerging Artist Award addresses the same themes and as implied by the title is awarded to an emerging artist.
- The MUA Blake Prize for Human Justice provides an opportunity for artists, within the overall framework of the prize, to engage with issues of human justice. This $5,000 award is sponsored by the Maritime Workers´ Union, which has a strong history of encouraging creative individuals to consider the nature of the society in which we live.
- The Blake Poetry Prize explores the nature of human spirituality through poetry. This $5,000 prize is co-presented by the NSW Writers´ Centre.
Why are we collecting funds?
The Blake Society does not receive government funding, nor is it underwritten by a philanthropic trust or foundation and it needs your help in order to continue supporting and inspiring arts practitioners while they explore these important themes in our society.
How will my funds be used?
To secure the future of the Blake Society and its work in provoking artists to respond to the current deeper questions of culture and society and, through contemporary art, to inspire thoughtful, creative and just conversations which embrace the diversity of Australia.
