What does it take to care?
Every day, millions of Australians care for someone else.

We nurse. We feed. We clean. We listen. We lift. We comfort. We organise appointments, remember birthdays, pack lunches, change dressings, wipe faces, make phone calls, manage medications and somehow keep everything moving.

Some of this work is paid. Much of it isn't.

In Australia, billions of hours of unpaid care happen every year — work that makes families, communities and the economy possible, but is so often invisible, undervalued or simply taken for granted.

Vulcana Circus is making a show about this work.

We're bringing the physicality of care to the circus stage: the weight of another body, the repetition, the balancing acts, the exhaustion, the tenderness, the humour and the extraordinary strength it takes to hold someone else up.

We'll tell stories from people whose lives are shaped by care — parents, partners, daughters, support workers, nurses, childcare workers, friends and carers. Stories of paid labour and unpaid labour. Of love and obligation. Of joy, frustration, sacrifice and resilience.

Because care isn't a side issue. Care is what keeps us all going.

But making circus is labour too. It takes artists, rehearsal space, designers, technicians, producers and time — and independent performance relies on people choosing to invest in the stories they want to see on stage.
