About this cause

Picture a Year 5 student from Boort arriving at Melbourne Aquarium with their class. They press their face against the glass as a stingray glides past. "I've never seen anything like this," they whisper. "I didn't even know places like this existed."

For 177 students last year, a $5,000 corporate sponsorship made moments like this possible. For hundreds more this year, these experiences remain out of reach because they can't afford to.

Over 60% of schools booking Urban Camp now select mainly free Melbourne activities.

Their budgets cover accommodation, meals, and transport to Melbourne. Museum entry fees, aquarium tickets, or ice skating sessions become impossible luxuries. When 41% of teachers report total camp budgets under $100 per student for everything, a $22 aquarium ticket is prohibitive.

These are students from small regional towns who've travelled hours to Melbourne. They see the Aquarium building from the tram. They walk past the Skydeck entrance. They know these experiences exist but they experience Melbourne looking in from outside.

For many, this is their first and possibly only school trip to the city. The difference between visiting free venues only and experiencing Melbourne's full range of attractions shapes how students see their state capital, and whether they can imagine a future here.

Your contribution to the City Discovery Scholarship Fund removes financial barriers and opens doors.

Corporate Partnership Impact:

$5,000 — Enables 180+ students to visit Melbourne Aquarium, Scienceworks, or the Melbourne Skydeck
$10,000 — Funds full Melbourne experiences for 12-15 small regional schools
$25,000 — Creates a named annual scholarship programme supporting 400+ students with full venue access

Individual/Team Giving:

$140 — Covers Melbourne Aquarium entry for 5 students
$440 — Enables a class of 20 to experience the Melbourne Skydeck
$990 — Funds ice skating at O'Brien's for 60 students

Last year, our Scholarship Fund supported seven school stays across 12 regional schools. Students who otherwise would have spent their Melbourne camp limited to free venues experienced the Aquarium. Their feedback is heartwarming as they marvelled at the fish swimming over their heads.

Right now, hundreds of students at Urban Camp each term are accessing only free Melbourne venues. The Melbourne Museum, State Library, and Parliament House are valuable educational experiences but they represent just a fraction of what Melbourne offers.

Students with adequate funding experience:

The wonder of Melbourne Aquarium's ocean tunnel
The thrill of ice skating at O'Brien's Icehouse
The perspective from Melbourne Skydeck
Hands-on science at Scienceworks
The clinking of chains at the Old Melbourne Gaol

Students without funding see these venues from tram windows.

This isn't a future problem. It's happening now. Every term, regional students return home having experienced a fraction of what their better-funded peers accessed. The gap is about different opportunities to imagine what's possible.

For an 8-year-old from Mildura experiencing Melbourne for the first time, walking through the Aquarium is the moment they realise the wider world isn't just on screens, it's accessible, real, and potentially theirs to explore.

Thank you for considering an investment that ensures regional students experience Melbourne as participants, not spectators.

Your contribution is tax-deductible. Every donation whether $50 or $5,000 directly funds venue access for students who otherwise would miss out. One hundred percent of scholarship funds cover student entry fees and experiences.

Donors receive recognition on Urban Camp's website and in our Annual Report. Corporate partners of $5,000+ are acknowledged as named scholarship sponsors.

When you support the City Discovery Scholarship Fund, you're not just funding tickets. You're funding the moment a child from regional Australia realises Melbourne, and all its opportunities, is theirs too.

Donate today and open Melbourne's doors to students who deserve to walk through them.

Tax-deductible donations welcome as Urban Camp has Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status.
