UWC Australia Scholarship Fund

"UWC still plays a role in my life every day- it is the belief that I can not only contribute to the world I live in, but I also have the power to change it." Nakkiah Lui (UWC Pearson College)

You can help us empower the next generation of Australians!

Why are we collecting funds?

UWC Australia believes in a future where people identify themselves as citizens of the world, and not as multifaceted groups, segregated by borders. The UWC movement believes that by supporting the youth of the world in a nurturing environment, we can create a peaceful and sustainable future.

Why education?

Kurt Hahn was a key figure in the development of experiential education. It is his ideas and values that the United World College movement are founded on. "Education must enable young people to effect what they have recognized to be right, despite hardships, despite dangers, despite inner scepticism, despite boredom, and despite mockery from the world..." - Kurt Hahn

"I regard it as the foremost task of education to insure the survival of these qualities: en enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self denial, and above all, compassion." - Kurt Hahn
You may have heard of some of the other organisations Kurt Hahn has founded:

  • Duke of Edinburgh's Award
  • Gordonstoun
  • Outward Bound
  • Salem

How does the organisation operate in Australia?

Though UWC was established in Australia in 1972 by renowned educationalists Sir Harold Wyndham and Sir James Darling, today, it is primarily UWC alumni who take responsibility for all of the UWC national operations. Alumni take great pride in fundraising for, and selecting, the next generation of students. Globally, UWC's capable and qualified alumni base form the backbone of this far reaching, not-for-profit, education movement. They volunteer countless hours and skills required to running a global network of national committees.

But, we need more than just good-will and volunteer hours to ensure meritorious, young, Australian's have the ability to attend a UWC.

How will the funds be used?

  • Airfares - In some cases, UWC schools and colleges provide full scholarships for an Australian candidate, but sometimes, the most deserving student will still not be able to afford a return airfare ticket to their UWC and back each year. With your help, we can make sure these student's families can see them between school years, and give them a big hug!
  • Pocket Money / Ancillary Costs - Along with the educational programme are a vast number of extra-curricular activities; in particular, students attending various UWCs go on week long, trips known as "Project Week". Your support can help ensure students facing financial hardship are still able to participate in ALL that UWC has to offer.
  • Scholarships - Not all the UWC schools and colleges provide full scholarships to Australian students. While UWC Australia does receive funds to help send students from the Faifax endowment fund, this money is only available to Victorian and New South Wales candidates. With your gift, you can help to provide a more equitable scholarship allocation process and give students from across Australia the same opportunities to attend UWC.
  • Awareness of UWC - Each year, alumni, parents of alumni, and volunteers help to spread the word about what scholarships are available by giving school talks, hosting information days, attending career/exchange expos and mailing schools, libraries, councils and youth organisations. As part of these promotional activities, UWC Australia uses a variety of material and mediums to help get the message out there. At this point in time, it is the overwhelming generosity of the individuals representing UWC who cover these ancillary costs. Your support will also help us to get these UWC opportunities out to the public, and give more Australians a chance at receiving this life changing opportunity.

Our first goal

The National Committee wants to provide more financial support for students of merit who need it. Our first fundraising goal is to raise enough funds to fully support at least 1 full scholarship for entry in 2022.
