Help us make sure no one has to navigate adoption alone

About this cause

Last year, 863 people reached out to VANISH for guidance and support. By April, our specialist counselling program was fully subscribed with a growing waitlist.

For many people impacted by adoption, the journey to understanding who they are can take decades. Finding others who've walked the same path - people who truly get it, or a counsellor who genuinely knows what adoption-related trauma looks and feels like, can be the turning point someone has been waiting for. As Julie, an adoptee who found our peer support group, put it:

"From the moment I walked into the group, I felt accepted, understood and validated. For the first time, I felt truly seen and heard."

For almost 40 years, VANISH has been that place for Victorians. We provide free counselling, peer support groups, and family tracing services to adoptees, mothers and fathers separated from a child through adoption and other family members. We also provide support to care leavers and donor conceived people, because everyone has the right to know where they come from.

Your generosity helps us keep these services free and accessible to everyone who needs them. We receive some funding from the Victorian Government, but demand far outstrips what we can deliver, and right now, funding for our peer support and counselling brokerage programs ends in June 2026.

No matter how big or small, your gift will make a difference.

  • $30 helps cover subscriptions to search databases and genealogy tools for our search team
  • $50 funds one place in a monthly peer support group led by expert facilitators, most of whom have a lived experience
  • $100 covers a DNA testing kit to support someone searching for family members when records alone aren't enough
  • $500 funds counselling sessions with a specialist who understands the ongoing impacts of adoption and family separation, for someone who can't afford to access that support on their own
  • An ongoing monthly donation builds long-term support for awareness-raising, community education, and advocacy efforts.

Thank you for considering a gift to VANISH. You are part of the community that makes this work possible. 💙
