Everyday, over 35 Australian women are diagnosed with breast cancer and breast cancer affects more than 13,000 women in Australia every year.

The Westmead Breast Cancer Institute is a leader in the provision of breast cancer care and is the only centre providing multidisciplinary research, education, clinical care, breast cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow up.

How will the funds be used?

The Westmead Breast Cancer Institute is committed to delivering the best possible information, advice, treatment and care to patients with breast cancer. We achieve this through the following programs:

BreastScreen NSW Sydney West-reducing the number of deaths from breast cancer though early detection, the BreastScreen program is available within Myer stores and hospitals across western Sydney.

Clinical Care-bringing together all medical and allied health specialties, our multidisciplinary treatment model gives breast cancer patients and their families the most comprehensive care and support.

Research-focusing on best-practice risk assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and survivorship, through innovative projects and collaborations.

Education-providing valuable information to patients with breast cancer, their families and the community, and also to health professionals to help them deliver the best possible care.

Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:

  • State-of-the-art digital breast screening facilities across Western Sydney and the extension of screening services to poorer and hard to reach communities.
  • Provision of clinical services and upgrades to equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Supportive care program for women affected by breast cancer including counseling and lymphoedema care and support.
  • Research into breast cancer prevention, treatment methods and patient care.
  • Education on breast health and breast cancer treatment through the development of Educational Resources for women and patients.
  • Education for consumers and rural communities including the public forum, fact sheets and support groups.
  • Education of health professionals including rural breast care nurses and specialist training fellowships.
