Whale Chorus' Mission

Our mission is to reinvigorate theatre’s true function as a ritual of reconnection. We tell heart-centred stories, from Shakespeare to boundary pushing original plays, and experiment with new ways of engaging audiences through immersive, immediate and courageous theatre. Alongside our performance seasons we are committed to nurturing the next generation of storytellers and theatre makers through our artist development, training and education programs.

Our Impact

Whale Chorus makes a unique contribution to the cultural life of Newcastle with fun, thought-provoking and compelling original theatre which resonates strongly with local audiences and creates career opportunities for artists in our region.  Across 2023 and 2024 we presented multiple sell out seasons and performed for 4252 audience members, employed 80 creative workers and trained 50 local artists. We receive swathes of glowing audience feedback that highlights the significance of our impact, such as

“It's so excellent to see true experimental theatre in not only Newcastle, but outside of the CBD! Hunter Audiences are hungry for the work and concepts that Gibson and Whale Chorus are producing“.

Our theatre is deeply local and born of the places and people of our city. Our creative response to the limited performance venues in Newcastle is to transform our city’s spaces into unique sites for theatre including public parks, giant fig trees, community halls and reimagine traditional theatres for immersive experiences.

You can catch our next production Meet Me At The Baths headlining the New Annual festival with a new site-specific performance at the Newcastle Ocean Baths based on local stories. Learn more: https://newannual.com/explore/events/meet-me-at-the-baths
