Our vision is to enrich the lives of people with a physical disability through participation in sport.
Sport is a powerful tool for rehabilitation and integration and is an important pathway to social connection, increasing confidence, social skills and independence. People with disabilities don't have access to the same sporting opportunities as their able-bodied peers yet the need to engage in physical activity is far greater for this group in our community.
1 in 5 Australians have a disability. Disabled adults are 9 times more likely to report both cardio vascular diseases & diabetes than those not disabled.
Wheelchair Sports NSW needs funds for expensive specialised equipment such as sports wheelchairs for various sports which start from $2,000 to loan to members so they can participate. We require funding to operate a variety of regular sporting programs and tournaments across the state. These include wheelchair tennis, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair lawn bowls, track and road and many more. We provide financial support to our members through subsidies and Member Grants to go towards covering expenses associated with their sport. We run regular Come N Try days as a relaxed way to introduce people to a sport so they can have a go. We have professional staff available to our 500 members to run programs, provide support and develop important connections.
