Young Voices of Melbourne is one of Australia’s finest choral programs for young singers, renowned for its passionate performances, engaging repertoire and outstanding Kodály-based music education program. Under the direction of Juliana Kay, YVM trains singers from age 0 to 30 across six choirs and an early childhood program.
YVM was founded in 1990 by Mark O’Leary OAM and has a proud history of performing, recording and touring. Aside from hosting regular concerts in Melbourne, its choirs have performed at major events and festivals, including the 2006 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony (Melbourne), National Folk Festival (Canberra), Festival of Voices (Hobart) and concerts with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The choir has released 13 CD recordings of Australian and international children’s choral music.
The YVM Performing Choir tours every year and have taken their music to communities and festivals all around the world. YVM has been to all states and territories of Australia, and has performed in Europe, South Africa, Canada, the USA, Singapore, Thailand, Samoa, New Zealand and Japan. This September, the choir is going to South Australia to present concerts and workshops in Kangaroo Island and at the National Kodaly Conference in Adelaide.
Our three training choirs were created to teach primary aged singers the skills they need for a lifetime of engagement with choral singing. While the emphasis at this level is on education, these groups also perform regularly throughout the year at YVM concerts, festivals and special events.
Why do we need donations?
While our fees cover our basic operations, including staffing, admin and venue costs, we rely on donations, fund-raising and paid performances for the extra things such as:
- subsidising tours
- bringing in guest conductors to work with our kids
- buying new music
- hiring instrumentalists at our concerts
- commissioning new music
By donating to Young Voices of Melbourne, you are helping us to provide high-quality music education and touring opportunities to young people in Melbourne, and contributing to the vibrancy of Australia’s choral music scene.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
