This appeal aims to raise $10,000 to help restore eyesight for people in NTA-supported communities on the island of Flores.
Restoring sight transforms lives in immediate and powerful ways. Individuals who regain vision often return to productive livelihoods and are once again able to support their families. Carers—often young girls who stay home to assist visually-impaired grandparents—are freed to return to school. Children who would otherwise be sent far from their families to specialised schools may remain at home and participate fully in their community.
Sight disorders remain a major challenge in NTT, the poorest province of Indonesia, where around 3% of the population is sight-Impaired. Importantly, more than 75% of these cases are treatable with a simple cataract operation. While the operation itself is free under Indonesia’s universal health insurance program, the real barrier is the cost of travel, accommodation, and the need for a guardian. These expenses put treatment out of reach for the poorest families.
NTA is already taking action in West Timor. By partnering with medical specialists and other organisations, we are successfully helping a number of sight-impaired people access assessment and treatment. But this is only the beginning. The need is also great in other parts of the province. We are committed to expanding access across all NTA-supported communities in Flores.
What We Need
To make sight restoration possible, we need to cover essential out-of-pocket expenses that impede patients from attending clinics—travel, accommodation, and guardian support. Without this help, even free surgery remains inaccessible. We need your help to achieve this goal.
A Story of Sight Restored: Yuyun
Yuyun, a 20-year-old woman from a remote village 40 km west of Soe in West Timor, began losing her sight as a young teenager. With limited vision, she attended a boarding school for children with disabilities so she could learn braille. Living far from her family was difficult, but necessary.
Her life changed when her parents brought her to a sight-restoration clinic supported by NTA. An ophthalmologist confirmed that her vision could be restored with a simple cataract operation. After treatment, Yuyun returned home, rejoined her local high school, and went on to graduate in 2024. Today, she is studying agriculture in Kupang, with plans to return to her family farm and use her skills to grow their livelihood.
Stories like Yuyun’s show the profound and lasting impact sight restoration can have—not only for one person, but for an entire family and community.
